Custom built-ins are one of the most requested finish carpentry projects — and for good reason. They turn an awkward nook or blank wall into functional, permanent storage that's designed specifically for your space. Here's how a typical built-in project moves from first conversation to finished piece.
1. Design Consultation
The process starts with understanding your space — dimensions, ceiling height, existing trim style, and how you plan to use the piece (books, media, display, storage, or a mix). We also talk through material and finish preferences at this stage.
2. Measuring and Design
Built-ins are measured precisely on-site, since walls, floors, and ceilings are rarely perfectly square in an existing home. Design details — shelf spacing, door or open-shelf configuration, integrated lighting, hardware — are worked out before any material is ordered.
3. Material Selection
Wood species and finish are chosen based on your budget, durability needs, and how the piece should look next to your existing trim and furniture. Paint-grade material, stained hardwood, and furniture-grade species all have different cost and appearance profiles.
4. Construction and Installation
Depending on the project's complexity, components may be built in a shop and installed on-site, or built in place — particularly for pieces that need to fit tightly against an irregular wall or ceiling line. Installation includes fitting, leveling, and securing the piece as a permanent part of the room.
5. Trim and Finish Work
The final stage integrates the built-in with the surrounding room — matching or complementing existing trim profiles, applying finish coats, and making sure reveals and gaps are clean and consistent.
What to Have Ready Before Your Consultation
- Rough sense of what you want to store or display
- Photos or measurements of the space, if available
- Any style references — modern, traditional, craftsman
- A rough budget range, even if approximate
